Various Philippine SFD’08 Celebrations
In celebration of the Software Freedom Day 2008, different organizations/companies have arranged for a get together cum training cum conference. Below is the list of invitations to the different parties that you can choose from. I will be updating this from time to time, just to keep you posted.
SFD PARTY #1
On 20th September 2008, the world will celebrate Software Freedom Day.
We share the same excitement of those who have outspokenly supported
Free and Open Source software and technologies. We, together with
8Layer Technologies, wish to participate by holding a simple but meaty
The Software Freedom Day ’08 that we will conduct co-occurring with
the world’s celebration is one event that you are especially invited
This will be a day-long affair. We have specifically chosen topics
that we feel are up to par the needs and requirements of both FOSS and
NON-FOSS users, individuals and organizations alike. Your earnest
involvement in this exclusive assemblage of free and open hearts and
minds is one ingredient to the success of the event.
We have to tell you this early that this is an intimate dissection and
discussion of select Free and Open Source applications. Hence, we are
doing away (for the meantime) with a big crowd participation.
Please do not forget on September 20, 2008; 9:00am to 2:00pm. Food
will be served. PLDT Innolab at Boni Ave Mandaluyong has provided us a
complete facility for our small but elite gathering. Along this line,
we therefore ask you to confirm by reply email your interest in
attending our Software Freedom Day 08 event.
The tentative Agenda is as follows:
1. Linux Desktop
* the Ubuntu Operating System
* Desktop “Nice to Have”
2. Opensource IP telephony
3. What’s new with Web Technology?
4. Opensource Security (by UR Solutions)
* System security
5. FOSS/Swiss knife for network management (by 8Layer Technologies)
SFD PARTY #2
I know all of us are busy. CP-Union (www.cp-union.org) and other groups are coordinating for the SFD Celebration at the University of Makati this Sept 20.
If there are interested volunteers to give a very introductory talk on “What is Free and Open Source Software?” during the morning session, CP-Union and the coordinating group will greatly appreciate it. While we can give the talk as well, it will be a an opportunity for PLUG to participate on this global event. Imagine a software freedom campaign without a linux users group in it…
Please contact me directly at rick [at] cp-union [dot] org. We still need some sponsors to cover the CDs and hand-outs we are printing for the kids (students and newbies). We are expecting at least 500 students from UMak alone and a few high schools have emailed me for their attendance.
We are also having a similar celebration at PUP-Taguig with about 200 students attending. We also need volunteer speakers for them.
If your are anywhere near these two campuses and would like to share FOSS magic to these students, please email me directly.
Team Blue also has a similar effort on SFD.
SFD PARTY # 3

Garcia Avenue, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City together with Fedora Ambassadors Philippines, LinuxChix Philippines, Slackware Linux Users Group Philippines (SLUGPhils), Philippine Linux Windows Users Group (PH-LWUG), Adaptive Technology for Rehabilitation, Integration & Empowerment of the Visually Impaired (ATRIEV), One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Philippines, and Novare Technologies.
SFD PARTY #4 (Davao City)
DabaweGNU Inc. in partnership with the University of Mindanao and PSITE would like to invite you to attend the Davao celebration of Software Freedom Day (SFD) 2008. SFD is an annual event celebrated worldwide to honor contributors to Free/ Open Source Software. It is also an event that aims to promote the advantages of using FOSS to the local community. This year we will be celebrating it on September 20, 2008 (Saturday) with a half-day seminar to be held at the University of Mindanao Auditorium, Matina Campus. The program will run from 1:00 – 5:00 PM. If you would like to know more about this event, please visit our project website.
We hope to see you there!
